Govt to form task force to review death penalty policy, direction, says Azalina

The Malaysian government will establish a task force to review the country's death penalty policy. The task force, under the Criminal Law Reform Committee, will conduct a comprehensive review using an evidence-based approach, involving stakeholders including families of death row inmates and victims. The government is committed to examining the matter thoroughly before making any final decision. The review follows suggestions from stakeholders during engagement sessions in April, which called for a more in-depth study. A moratorium on executions remains in force, in line with Malaysia's support for the United Nations General Assembly resolution. The task force aims to address the issue of 49 inmates still on death row, with the number expected to increase without a comprehensive policy solution.
